A Practical Guide to Teaching ESP Using Data-Driven Learning (DDL) Tools and Techniques

Abstract:

This presentation and workshop will explore the impact of corpora and corpus tools on ESP course design and teaching/learning strategies. In the presentation, participants will be introduced to various applications of corpora that can help them develop effective ESP courses and programs. Then, in the workshop, participants will be offered a practical guide to using Data-Driven Learning (DDL) tools and techniques in the ESP classroom. Here, participants will learn how to encourage students to develop their own corpora and then use these to investigate unique features of language in their specialist disciplines.

Bio:

Laurence Anthony is Professor of Educational Technology and Applied Linguistics at Waseda University, Faculty of Science and Engineering. He has a BSc degree (Mathematical Physics) from the University of Manchester, UK, and MA (TESL/TEFL) and PhD (Applied Linguistics) degrees from the University of Birmingham, UK. He is a former director and current technical English program coordinator at the Center for English Language Education (CELESE), Waseda University. He also serves on the Editorial Board of the Taiwan International ESP Journal and is a Guest Editor for the Elsevier English for Specific Purposes Journal.
