Featured Speaker Workshop: Ecology of Effort: Motivation and Investment Workshop
CUE is sponsoring Featured Speaker Chris Casanave. Come hear this insightful and dynamic speaker share some wisdom from the field.
This workshop will explore the notion of ecology of effort and its
connection to more traditional concepts of motivation. Ecology of effort
means the many interrelated contextual and emotional influences on a
person's desire to invest effort (or not, as the case may be) in
studying a second language throughout one's career, or for that matter
in doing anything that is difficult and challenging in our lives as
students and teachers.***Sunday 10/27 3:50-5:20 Room: Kikusui
Featured Speaker Presentation: Thinking, conducting, and writing up research
This presentation will explore the research process and the concept of
distancing. This refers to how a final research report has gone through
many steps that have distanced it from the actual experiences we are
trying to study, which should cause authors to reflect on the truth of
their assertions. The focus will be on graduate level and professional
academic writing experiences, by both L2 and L1 users of English.***Saturday 10/26 1:20-2:20 Room: Kikusui

unique professional stories, followed by the insight of CUE Featured

Penny Ur Talk -- Getting them to talk in English
Co-sponsored with Yokohama JALT
Abstract:
It is always a problem getting students to talk informally in English:
however interesting the topic we suggest, they often prefer to keep
silent, or to express themselves their mother tongue. This talk suggests
a few guidelines that will go some way towards solving these problems,
illustrated by some practical activities intended for students at
various levels of proficiency.
